Why We Don't Compete on Price

Waarom we niet concurreren op prijs

There's an easy way to build a beard oil brand: cheap base oil, generic scent, low price, high volume. That's not the path we chose.

Il Belga Barbuto is positioned as a premium brand, not because it has to be, but because the brand's promise — craftsmanship, exclusivity, a story of two cultures — doesn't hold up under a volume-driven pricing strategy.

What premium actually means

Concretely, this means: natural ingredients instead of cheap fillers, small batches instead of mass production, and a scent development process that takes months instead of weeks. It also means choosing a production partner based on craftsmanship, not the lowest price.

That comes at a cost. But it also means that whoever buys a bottle of Il Belga Barbuto isn't holding an anonymous consumer product — but an object with attention, time and a story built in.

Why this matters

A low price attracts the wrong customer: someone who compares only on price will also leave for the first cheaper competitor. We'd rather build a relationship with men who know what they're buying and why — men who recognize quality, even when the price is higher than what you'd find at a supermarket.

That's not an elitist stance. It's an honest one: you get exactly what you pay for, with no hidden compromises in the formulation. In the long run, we believe quality pays for itself: in customers who return, in word of mouth, and in a brand that keeps its promises — bottle after bottle.

Emotion, identity and craftsmanship: that's what we compete on. Not the lowest price on the shelf.
