Does beard hair grow back thicker after shaving?

Wordt baardhaar dikker van scheren?

It is one of the most persistent myths about beard hair: shave often, and it supposedly grows back thicker, coarser and faster. It is not true. What you feel and see is real, but the explanation is different from what the myth claims.

Does beard hair grow back thicker after shaving?

No. Shaving cuts the hair off straight at the surface of the skin. So you feel the thicker, blunt base of the hair instead of the fine, naturally tapered tip that was there before. That stubble feels coarser, but the hair itself has not changed. The thickness, colour and structure of a hair are determined in the root below the skin, and a razor does not reach there. What grows back is identical to what was there.

Does beard hair come back faster after shaving?

It does not. Growth rate is governed by the hair follicle and your hormones, not by how often you shave. Beard hair grows on average about a centimetre a month, whether you shave daily or never. That a beard is quickly visible again after shaving is because you start from zero: the first millimetres stand out at once. That is visibility, not speed.

Why the myth persists

The myth holds because feel and visibility deceive. Fresh stubble is coarse and dark at the base, so a freshly shaved beard looks and feels rougher and fuller. But the moment you measure it, you see the same thing every time: the same hair, the same growth. What actually makes a beard softer and healthier is not shaving less, but caring for the skin beneath it. Read about that in the skin beneath the beard, or discover our beard oil.

Shaving changes how a hair feels, not how it grows.
